In cultivate Japanese bonsai tree, there are many varieties of technique to maintain your bonsai that available to learn and use by you. Most of bonsai art techniques are unique but some of them are ordinary gardening technique.

Pruning: Pruning is a technique to remove barks and unwanted branches on certain spots with retaining the bonsai appearance and nuance.

Leaf Trimming: this technique have some purpose with pruning but different with pruning, when pruning is for removing the unwanted branches, leaf trimming is used for removing dead and unwanted leaves or needles on the plant.

Wiring: Wiring is technique we use to change direction of branches to certain direction we preferred, there are tow type of wire we used when apply wiring, aluminum and copper wire. Both of those wires have different way and spot to use.

Clamping: Clamping is a technique that have some purpose with wiring but the different is only this technique apply on thicker and larger part of the tree that cannot accomplished with wiring.

Grafting: adding branches/roots to expand upon the design of the Japanese bonsai tree.

Defoliation: clipping off the leaves so that they grow back smaller, to add to the dwarfing nature of the art of bonsai.

Deadwood: removing the bark from a branch to emulate maturity in the Japanese bonsai tree.

Watering: like other ordinary plant or tree, bonsai tree is also need for watering, but in bonsai tree condition is you must measure how much water you use to watering due to the size of bonsai pot. Watering is a step when bonsai growers must very carefully because if you give too little water you can dehydrate the bonsai and more water could cause the root rotting.

Repotting: in bonsai art, repotting is one of most important and unique step or technique we use to keep our bonsai healthy. Repotting is have purpose to avoid bound in the root and accelerate the growth of the bonsai. With repotting your bonsai from smaller bonsai pot to larger pot it could help the bonsai root the space to grow. Repotting is generally apply when on the dormant period of bonsai (every bonsai have different dormant period some of them at spring and some of the in winter)

In cultivate Japanese bonsai tree, you could need some special tools. The most universe tools are concave cutter. Concave cutter has function to cut pieces of tree flush with the bark. Beside concave cutter, there are also other tools like branch bending jacks, shears with different size for trimming or pruning and wire pliers.

Like all bonsai, Japanese bonsai tree comes with many different species, size, shape and cultivation technique. Some are outdoor bonsai and some are indoor bonsai. Everyone can cultivate Japanese bonsai tree into a masterpiece for home or garden through practice, care, and patience.
