Bonsai is art from to growing miniature tree in containers and be trained for aesthetic purpose. Bonsai was originated from China but popularized by Japanese. In Japanese “bonsai” is combination from two words, which “bon” means tray or container and “sai” is mean planting, so “bonsai” is mean tree or plant that planting or growing in container or pot.
Cultivating Bonsai tree has been practiced over centuries and continents and there are some species have become favorite species. Technically almost any shrub and woody stemmed can be cultivated as bonsai tree, but some tree species have characteristics those bonsai artists favorable. Suitability and adaptability to grow in limited space in bonsai pot, how difficult the plant to be trained and appearance are characteristics that suit to cultivate as bonsai tree.
There are five tree species with its characteristics to cultivate as bonsai tree.

1. Maple Bonsai

Pine tree have many different types or species that be able to cultivate as bonsai although every one of them have own requirements and style preferences. Japanese Black Pine is most popular and favorite by many bonsai growers due to its solid root system. Japanese White Pine is another popular variety from Pine tree species with its beautiful natural form.

5. Chinese Elm Bonsai
The Chinese elm becomes popular choice to cultivate as bonsai due to its natural lush and small foliage. In bonsai art, tree species with small leaves are more preferred to cultivate as bonsai because it will make the bonsai tree look balance when it grow up. This is a main reason why bonsai growers will resort to techniques to encourage the bonsai to produce a small leaves and in Chinese elm case, there are unnecessary to apply leaf size reduction. In young age, Chinese elm will produce a corky bark which the appearance of age that desirable in bonsai tree and also allow the bonsai tree to be able to train by bonsai growers.
